Avoidance

Avoidance is emptied thought,
Of disorientation
From collision, time and again.
Those school words:
Erosion and attrition
Meant of stones and trenches
Wreak concussion
Upon humans.

Avoidance is trauma,
The efforts that blew up
Engulfing and then fleeing.
The kind hearts reneged
Lost forever in fear’s retreat.
The treatments and prisons tested
Beyond your strength,
Bursting, again, into flame and escape.
The webs you plunged into
Stonily resigned,
The bites and near drowns.
Hours of hiding and hours of acquiescing
Shame and chains within and, therefore, without.

At every path these shadows hang,
Yesterday’s smell reeks.
Study the beetles of impulse,
And see them crusted with vanity,
Bewilderment, resignation
And all other soils of unthought.
Should I rejoin these serried lines
Or wait for them to take me?

It all seems the same,
Straw in flowing river,
Undigestible circle
To shadow’s fields I return.

Avoidance is human turned glass,
Desperately hording
That final break of heart.
